. >> reporter: i'm listening right now to the town bells ringing here in newtown, connecticut. i'm not sure why they are ringing but this community has come together to mourn together for this tragedy that happened at the school here. we've got much more ahead on our special coverage of the connecticut school shooting which starts right now. >>> and it is one of the deadliest shooting rampages in u.s. history. all morning we'll be updating victims and the investigation here in newtown, connecticut. we now know the name of the shooter and dig into what was behind this monstrous act and a second crime scene tied to the first. what investigators found when they went to the suspect's house. it is saturday, december 15th. i want to say good morning to everyone. it's not a good morning, it's a difficult morning, but we are spending it together here. i'm john berman. you're watching our special coverage of the connecticut school shooting live from newtown, connecticut. and i want to bring in my colleague, ali velshi. hey, ali. >> reporter: john, it's a sad morning and will get sadder in a few moments.

. these connecticut parents had dropped off their kids for a typical friday at school. then about 9:30 in the morning, they received robo calls and text messages. sandy hook elementary school was put on alert. >> i just got a message saying -- from the superintendent that there was -- there was an unconfirmed shooting and, you know, everybody is in lock down. >> i was a little scared. i felt sick to my stomach. >> reporter: a gunman was firing away as teachers went into lockdown and parents rushed to the scene. >> i heard screaming. and so we -- we went -- like we went to the wall and we sat down and then police came in. it's like is he in here? then he ran out. then our teacher -- then somebody yelled get to a safe place. >> inside, children were hiding as a gunman fired away. >> they were cryin in the closet. in the closet of the art room. and eventually, they were leaving and when they were leaving, the police made them hold hands. the police told them to close their eyes. >> told to keep their eyes closed because a gunman was on a killing spree, killing the principal, a counselor, child after chi

heard the news out of newtown, connecticut. she said we always think it can't happen here, and we pray fervently that it won't. but as we know from our experience this summer, kit happen anywhere. the mayor of aurora, colorado, is still helping his community try to recover from the mass shooting there this summer, where 12 people were shot and killed and another 58 people were shot but survived. he said today from aurora, "our hearts go out to the people of newtown. "colorado's senator, michael bennet said today as coloradans, we know how this type of tragedy can shake a community to its core. we are here for connecticut today. colorado's governor, john hickenlooper, he said "we know too well what impact this kind of violence has on a community." he said that the first thing he wanted to do today was talk to his counterpart governor in connecticut, dan malloy. governor hickenlooper said "i cannot put into words how impossible it seems to me that this can happen again so suddenly." virginia tech was the site of a mass shooting five years ago, where 32 people were shot and killed on a co

in a small community in connecticut. sandy hook elementary school in the small community of about 27,000 residents was the site of a shooting rampage. at this hour, we know 26 people at the school were shot and killed by a lone gunman. 20 of those deceased were children. surviving students and their parents said teachers ordered children to hide in closets. witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots, as many as 100 rounds. police found the shooter dead. officers never fired a shot. the gunman's mother was found dead at a newtown location where the gunman lived. police have released no motive for the attack. the weapons used in the shooting were all legally purchased and were registered to the gunman's mother. an emotional president obama addressed the nation this afternoon from the white house. >> we've endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years. and each time i learn the news, i react not as a president, but as anybody else would, as a parent. and that was especially true today. i know there is not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that

sad news that their children had been killed and have been with the governor of connecticut and others who are speaking with them. i know you've been speaking with your law enforcement sources. describe what's going on at this moment as they are trying to find more information about the shooter and how he was connected to this. >> they're doing background investigations into the shooter but also going to locations associated with the shooter. not just directly associated with ryan lanza, his residence-- and they're looking far location in new jersey there-- but also his family's residences in and around connecticut. he has a father who is down in stamford. he has a mother who is a teacher at the school whose house is in newtown. they went there. ha's where they saw what appeared to be a body and they're doing an entry there to see what else they can learn inside that house. and, of course, they're spinning all the records and databases to get additional background. that will give them information but it won't give them the why. the only way they're going to get the why is to get his in

and lieutenant george are cinco of the newtown police department and the connecticut state police from what we know and don't know about yesterday's shooting at sandy hook elementary school. we know that the gunman has been didn't fied as 20-year-old adam lanza who first killed his mother and went to a kindergarten class in the school where he worked killing 27 people. 20 children, six adults and himself. two handguns were found at the school as well as a semiautomatic rifle. law enforcement told officials that the gun was licensed to the gunman's mother. president obama will address the media in his weekly address. we'll have that later. but some hope that he might make an effort to tackle gun control for the first time. the shooting the deadliest in history as raised questions about the gun laws but also school security and preparation. we're going to msnbc's chris jansing who is outside of nowtown in connecticut this morning. chris, can you give us an idea of what we're learning, what new facts have we acquired? >> from the time, chris, went off the air last night, we saw a large exodus fro

're leaving in new jersey, out your door or new york city area, southern connecticut, some showers are about to move through. they're already coming in pretty good now, moving on interstate 78 and 80 across new jersey and into the greater new york city area. they'll be in and out quickly by 8:00 a.m. they should be overwith. it's little area of showers. you can see it right here. southern hudson valley to just north of philadelphia. that's about it. those will quickly blow through long island and also through connecticut as we go throughout the early morning. after that, the warm front goes through and will warm up in a hurry. a pool of cold air moved in overnight over new england. hartford at 32. it's 17 degrees warmer right now in new york. but that cold air that just temporarily settled in overnight will be pushed out in a hurry during the day to day. all the warm air to the south will win out. temperatures are going to rise rapidly. should head up to 58 today in hartford after starting out in 32. that is pretty incredible, almost a 30 degree temperature rise during the daylight hours. 73

picture shows we still have lighter snow falling in new york city, northern new jersey, connecticut and into massachusetts. but that rain is kind of sweeping up into nas kaw county in long island and suffolk and it will come down heavy and hard. snowfall totals 3 to 5 inches across parts of pennsylvania with a little bit of more intensity more towards the center of the state. let's zoom into massachusetts, 4 to 8 inches. expect some higher amounts in this region here towards areas of -- sections of connecticut and into much of rhode island. snow across the entire state. and then you see the winter storm warnings extend to coastal maine. we could see up to a foot of snow into areas of coastal new hampshire and maine especially towards late tonight, early tomorrow. let's time it out for you. notice saturday night at 11:00, storm will be intense. we're expecting brutal winds for much of new england. you can see a little bit of mix in terms of precipitation for the cape and the islands. overall these areas you see in brighter white where we're expecting some of the more intense snowfall

, the fiscal cliff, newtown, connecticut, what happened up there, that's the gem feeling overall. jcpenney, they've had promotions walking away from it every day, low discount price story. oppenheimer noted discount racks had been cleared and the traffic seems to have improved in that store. maybe that change in their philosophy has helped them out. that's a note that was out on oppenheimer today. bottom line here, guys, is i think we are seeing some movement with some companies to deal with some of these retail sales issues. you'll see a lot of pressure on margins. david, i think you mentioned this, about what was going on with inflows and outflows from equity mutual funds. it's true we're continuing to get outflows from equity mutual funds. that's certainly been disappointing. we had it going through up until last week. the end of last week, it was reported the first outflows from treasuries. more specifically, from general bond funds. that's the first time we've seen this in a very, very long time. all right, it was a very small number, something on the order of $1 billion or something

being up. all of a sudden then, we had the impacts of sandy, a tragedy up in newtown, connecticut, and just a lot of other factors that just put a damper on the season. >> so, it is fair to say that it started better than it ended now. >> it started better than it ended. there was a lot of excitement around black friday. i mean it was almost like the super bowl. they have all this advertising, drag people out, it's the biggest event of the year come shopping, and then week after that we had the pro bowl. there was no excitement. there was no reason to come out shopping. so big bang, but it kind of waned as we went into the season. >> how much of the season is in the books now? i mean, what's still left to happen? >> there's a couple of big days still coming. i think this weekend is a big weekend as people redeem gift cards, go into the stores, exchange items for what they're looking for. hopefully get that add-on sale and people start to take advantage of the clearance sale, i would say, though, 95% of it is in the books. we've probably got some strong days ahead of us, though, th
